# Settings and Environment Variables { #settings-and-environment-variables }

In many cases your application could need some external settings or configurations, for example secret keys, database credentials, credentials for email services, etc.

Most of these settings are variable (can change), like database URLs. And many could be sensitive, like secrets.

For this reason it's common to provide them in environment variables that are read by the application.

 Typically users parameterize the use of plugins, or have custom values like ${user.name}
 for use in elements like the <developerConnection/>. It would be idea if we
 could encapsulate everything we need about the project in the POM including
 plugin parameters and anything else.

 We once had a document that Vincent and I agreed upon and I was about to
 implement it and then I disappeared for 8 months so it never came to pass.

For instance, given that TLS is enabled and you need to add trust for MinIO's own CA and for the CA of a Keycloak server, a Kubernetes secret can be created from the certificate files using `kubectl`:

For that, you can use the `WSGIMiddleware` and use it to wrap your WSGI application, for example, Flask, Django, etc.

## Using `WSGIMiddleware` { #using-wsgimiddleware }

You need to import `WSGIMiddleware`.

Then wrap the WSGI (e.g. Flask) app with the middleware.

And then mount that under a path.
