MinIO needs a persistent volume to store configuration and application data. For testing purposes, you can launch MinIO by simply passing a directory (`/data` in the example below). This directory gets created in the container filesystem at the time of container start. But all the data is lost after container exits.

All container images are available as manifest lists and support the described
architectures. It is also possible to pull a specific architecture directly by
adding the "-$ARCH" suffix  to the container image name.

## What is a Container Image { #what-is-a-container-image }

A **container** is run from a **container image**.

A container image is a **static** version of all the files, environment variables, and the default command/program that should be present in a container. **Static** here means that the container **image** is not running, it's not being executed, it's only the packaged files and metadata.
