# Python Types Intro { #python-types-intro }

Python has support for optional "type hints" (also called "type annotations").

These **"type hints"** or annotations are a special syntax that allow declaring the <abbr title="for example: str, int, float, bool">type</abbr> of a variable.

By declaring types for your variables, editors and tools can give you better support.

     * regrettable implementations like our own Sets.filter, Collection.size() is sometimes a
     * linear-time operation, and it can even have side effects. Thus, we limit the special case to
     * List, which is _even more likely_ to have size() implemented to be fast and side-effect-free.

## Run the Server Program { #run-the-server-program }

If you installed an ASGI server manually, you would normally need to pass an import string in a special format for it to import your FastAPI application:

But when you import `Query`, `Path`, `Depends`, `Security` and others from `fastapi`, those are actually functions that return special classes.
