### Server-Side Encryption with a KMS

SSE-S3 allows an S3 client to en/decrypt an object at the MinIO server using a KMS. The MinIO
server only assumes that the KMS provides two services:

- `GenerateKey`: Takes a key ID and generates a new data key from a master key referenced by the key ID. It returns the new data key in two different forms: The plain data key and the data key encrypted using the master key.

    * Two api fields are defined correspondingly:
        * Service.Spec.ExternalTrafficPolicy <- 'service.beta.kubernetes.io/external-traffic' annotation.
        * Service.Spec.HealthCheckNodePort <- 'service.beta.kubernetes.io/healthcheck-nodeport' annotation.

 * names by broadcasting a query, directing queries to a server such as
 * Samba or WINS. NetBIOS is currently the primary networking layer for
 * providing name service, datagram service, and session service to the
 * Microsoft Windows platform. A NetBIOS name can be 15 characters long

### Avoiding Collisions in IP allocation to Services

Kubernetes 1.24 introduced a new opt-in feature that allows you to
[soft-reserve a range for static IP address assignments](https://kubernetes.io/docs/concepts/services-networking/service/#service-ip-static-sub-range)
to Services.
With the manual enablement of this feature, the cluster will prefer automatic assignment from
the pool of Service IP addresses thereby reducing the risk of collision.

# Settings and Environment Variables { #settings-and-environment-variables }

In many cases your application could need some external settings or configurations, for example secret keys, database credentials, credentials for email services, etc.

Most of these settings are variable (can change), like database URLs. And many could be sensitive, like secrets.

For this reason it's common to provide them in environment variables that are read by the application.
