R8 / ProGuard ------------- R8 and ProGuard are both code optimizers for `.class` files. R8 is the [default optimizer][r8] in Android Studio 3.4 and newer. It works well with all releases of OkHttp. ProGuard was the previous default. We’re [tracking problems][proguard_problems] with interactions

# Note: We intentionally don't add the flags we'd need to make Flags and Enums # work. That's because the Proguard configuration required to make them work on # optimized code would preclude lots of optimization, like converting enums # into ints. # Throwables uses internal APIs for lazy stack trace resolution -dontnote sun.misc.SharedSecrets -keep class sun.misc.SharedSecrets { *** getJavaLangAccess(...); } -dontnote sun.misc.JavaLangAccess

docs/features/r8_proguard.md
R8 / ProGuard ============= If you use OkHttp as a dependency in an Android project which uses R8 as a default compiler you don't have to do anything. The specific rules are [already bundled][okhttp3_pro] into the JAR which can be interpreted by R8 automatically. If you, however, don't use R8 you have to apply the rules from [this file][okhttp3_pro]. You might also need rules from [Okio][okio] which is a dependency of this library.

* a more precisely named annotation? * <li>While a dependency on Android ought to be easy if it's for annotations only, it will * probably require adding the dep to various ACLs, license files, and Proguard * configurations, and there's always the potential that something will go wrong. It * <i>probably</i> won't, since the deps are needed only in tests (and maybe someday in * testlib), but why bother?
