## Server Machine and Server Program

There's a small detail about names to keep in mind. 💡

The word "**server**" is commonly used to refer to both the remote/cloud computer (the physical or virtual machine) and also the program that is running on that machine (e.g. Uvicorn).

Then the next concepts to consider are all about the program running your actual API (e.g. Uvicorn).

## Program and Process

We will talk a lot about the running "**process**", so it's useful to have clarity about what it means, and what's the difference with the word "**program**".

### What is a Program

The word **program** is commonly used to describe many things:

browser --> proxy
proxy --> server
```

    The IP `0.0.0.0` is commonly used to mean that the program listens on all the IPs available in that machine/server.

The docs UI would also need the OpenAPI schema to declare that this API `server` is located at `/api/v1` (behind the proxy). For example:

## Motivation

Let's start with a simple example:

Calling this program outputs:

The function does the following:

* Takes a `first_name` and `last_name`.
* Converts the first letter of each one to upper case with `title()`.

* the data from the client to be sent through the network
* the data sent by your program to be received by the client through the network
* the contents of a file in the disk to be read by the system and given to your program
* the contents your program gave to the system to be written to disk
* a remote API operation
* a database operation to finish
* a database query to return the results

You can also create an environment variable only for a specific program invocation, that is only available to that program, and only for its duration.

To do that, create it right before the program itself, on the same line:

That command line program called `fastapi` is **FastAPI CLI**.

FastAPI CLI takes the path to your Python program and automatically detects the variable with the FastAPI (commonly named `app`) and how to import it, and then serves it.

For production you would use `fastapi run` instead. 🚀

A **container image** normally includes in its metadata the default program or command that should be run when the **container** is started and the parameters to be passed to that program. Very similar to what would be if it was in the command line.

When a **container** is started, it will run that command/program (although you can override it and make it run a different command/program).
