Your response model could have default values, like: {* ../../docs_src/response_model/tutorial004_py310.py hl[9,11:12] *} * `description: Union[str, None] = None` (or `str | None = None` in Python 3.10) has a default of `None`. * `tax: float = 10.5` has a default of `10.5`. * `tags: List[str] = []` has a default of an empty list: `[]`.Registered: Sun Sep 07 07:19:17 UTC 2025 - Last Modified: Sun Aug 31 09:15:41 UTC 2025 - 16K bytes - Viewed (0) -

docs/en/docs/tutorial/path-params-numeric-validations.md
Python will complain if you put a value with a "default" before a value that doesn't have a "default". But you can re-order them, and have the value without a default (the query parameter `q`) first. It doesn't matter for **FastAPI**. It will detect the parameters by their names, types and default declarations (`Query`, `Path`, etc), it doesn't care about the order.

* Data validation * Automatic documentation ## Defaults { #defaults } As query parameters are not a fixed part of a path, they can be optional and can have default values. In the example above they have default values of `skip=0` and `limit=10`.
