# ADR-0002 - Avoid using Java serialization

## Context

In Gradle we often need to serialize in-memory objects for caching, or to transmit them across process barriers, etc.
Java serialization is one way to implement this, however, despite its simplicity of implementation, it has several drawbacks:

- **Performance:**
Java's built-in serialization mechanism is often slower compared to other serialization solutions.

We can use this listener to race a pair of concurrent HTTP requests:

- JSON path expressions such as `FROM S3Object[*].path` are not yet evaluated.
- Large numbers (outside of the signed 64-bit range) are not yet supported.
- The Date [functions](https://docs.aws.amazon.com/AmazonS3/latest/dev/s3-glacier-select-sql-reference-date.html) `DATE_ADD`, `DATE_DIFF`, `EXTRACT` and `UTCNOW` along with type conversion using `CAST` to the `TIMESTAMP` data type are currently supported.
