### 1. Fetch the root identity

However, if you use the `pip install fastapi` command, the `python-multipart` package is not included by default.

To install it manually, make sure you create a [virtual environment](../../virtual-environments.md){.internal-link target=_blank}, activate it, and then install it with:

     * - Just the plugin is being built with the -f <pom> flag.
     * - Because of inter-module dependency collection, all projects in the multi-module project are collected.
     * - The plugin is not yet installed in a repository.
     *
     * Therefore, the build fails because the plugin is not found and plugins cannot be built in the same session.

That way, you don't have to "install" your local version to be able to test every change.

This only happens when you install using this included `requirements.txt` instead of running `pip install fastapi` directly.

That is because inside the `requirements.txt` file, the local version of FastAPI is marked to be installed in "editable" mode, with the `-e` option.

## Install the Server Program { #install-the-server-program }

When you install FastAPI, it comes with a production server, Uvicorn, and you can start it with the `fastapi run` command.

But you can also install an ASGI server manually.

Make sure you create a [virtual environment](../virtual-environments.md){.internal-link target=_blank}, activate it, and then you can install the server application.
