# ADR-0009 - Use American English

## Context

Gradle is an international open-source project with contributors from around the world. English is the primary language for code, comments, documentation, and communication, but there are variations in English spelling and terminology, specifically American English vs. British English.

Inconsistency in spelling conventions can lead to several issues:

- Kubectl: deprecated command line flags (like several of the klog flags) now have a `DEPRECATED: <explanation>` comment. ([#106172](https://github.com/kubernetes/kubernetes/pull/106172), [@pohly](https://github.com/pohly)) [SIG CLI]

- YAML documents separators ("---") can now be followed by whitespace and comments ("# ....") on the same line. Examples of unacceptable behavior include:

* The use of sexualized language or imagery, and sexual attention or
  advances of any kind
* Trolling, insulting or derogatory comments, and personal or political attacks
* Public or private harassment
* Publishing others' private information, such as a physical or email
  address, without their explicit permission
