## Setting up your development environment

In order to make changes to Gradle, you'll need:

* [Adoptium JDK](https://adoptium.net/temurin/archive/?version=17) (Java Development Kit) **version 17**. Fixed version is required to use [remote cache](#remote-build-cache).

You can use [WebSockets](https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/API/WebSockets_API) with **FastAPI**.

## Install `websockets` { #install-websockets }

Make sure you create a [virtual environment](../virtual-environments.md), activate it, and install `websockets` (a Python library that makes it easy to use the "WebSocket" protocol):

When you install FastAPI, it comes with a production server, Uvicorn, and you can start it with the `fastapi run` command.

But you can also install an ASGI server manually.

Make sure you create a [virtual environment](../virtual-environments.md), activate it, and then you can install the server application.

However, if you use the `pip install fastapi` command, the `python-multipart` package is not included by default.
