Each section gradually builds on the previous ones, but it's structured to separate topics, so that you can go directly to any specific one to solve your specific API needs.

It is also built to work as a future reference so you can come back and see exactly what you need.

## Run the code { #run-the-code }

By default FastAPI returns JSON responses.

If you declare a [Response Model](../tutorial/response-model.md) FastAPI will use it to serialize the data to JSON, using Pydantic.

If you don't declare a response model, FastAPI will use the `jsonable_encoder` explained in [JSON Compatible Encoder](../tutorial/encoder.md) and put it in a `JSONResponse`.
