# Build execution model

At the highest level, Gradle's execution model is quite simple:

Below is the protocol in some more detail:

1. The client looks for a compatible idle daemon. If there isn't one, it starts a new daemon.
2. The client connects to the idle daemon and sends it a request to do some work. If the daemon is no longer running, the client starts again.

The build tree state is managed by the `BuildTreeState` class.
An instance is created at the start of a build execution and discarded at the end of the execution.

### Build state

The "build state" holds the state for a build within the build definition for a single build execution, and is contained by the build tree state.

     * method is called on a new/empty execution request before the caller mutates it to fit its needs.
     *
     * @param request The execution request to populate, must not be {@code null}.
     * @param toolchains The toolchains to copy into the execution request, may be {@code null}.
     * @return The populated execution request, never {@code null}.
