manifests/helm-profiles/README.md
This folder provides a variety of "profiles" for helm installation. While a user can just explicitly pass this with `--values/-f`. However, Istio also provides a feature to bundle these with the charts, which is convenient when installing from remote charts. For details, see `copy-templates` Makefile target, and `manifests/zzz_profile.yaml`. Any changes to this folder should have a `make copy-templates` applied afterwards.

manifests/charts/README.md
Note: each component can be installed in parallel with an existing Istio 1.0 or 1.1 installation in `istio-system`. The new components will not interfere with existing apps, but can interoperate, and it is possible to gradually move apps from Istio 1.0/1.1 to the new environments and across environments ( for example canary -> prod ) Note: there are still some cluster roles that may need to be fixed, most likely cluster permissions

README.md
Istio is composed of these components: - **Envoy** - Sidecar proxies per microservice to handle ingress/egress traffic between services in the cluster and from a service to external services. The proxies form a _secure microservice mesh_ providing a rich set of functions like discovery, rich layer-7 routing, circuit breakers, policy enforcement and telemetry recording/reporting functions.
