> NOTE: Server side replication is supported for idempotent versions on directory objects.

- In ambient mode, the CNI plugin does not configure any networking, but is only responsible for synchronously pushing new pod events back up to an ambient watch server which runs as part of the Istio CNI node agent. The ambient server will find the pod netns and configure networking inside that pod via iptables. The ambient server will additionally watch enabled namespaces, and enroll already-started-but-newly-enrolled pods in a similar fashion.

### Controller (running locally)

1. Set env $WATCH_NAMESPACE (default value is "istio-system") and $LEADER_ELECTION_NAMESPACE (default value is "istio-operator")

1. Create the `WATCH_NAMESPACE` and `LEADER_ELECTION_NAMESPACE` if they are not created yet.

a set of control plane settings and components. While the entire mesh respects the same APIs and config,
apps may target different 'environments' which contain different instances and variants of Istio.

- Better security: separate Istio components reside in different namespaces, allowing different teams or
