manifests/charts/UPDATING-CHARTS.md
## Making changes ## Step 1. Make changes in charts and values.yaml in `manifests` directory Be sure to provide sufficient documentation and example usage in values.yaml. If the chart has a `values.schema.json`, that should be updated as well. ## Step 2. Update the istioctl/Operator values If you are modifying the `gateway` chart, you can stop here.

manifests/helm-profiles/README.md
# Helm Profiles This folder provides a variety of "profiles" for helm installation. While a user can just explicitly pass this with `--values/-f`. However, Istio also provides a feature to bundle these with the charts, which is convenient when installing from remote charts. For details, see `copy-templates` Makefile target, and `manifests/zzz_profile.yaml`. Any changes to this folder should have a `make copy-templates` applied afterwards.

Values.yaml settings are overridden the same way as the new API, though a customized CR overlaid over default values for the selected profile. Here's an example of overriding some global level default values ([samples/values-global.yaml](samples/values-global.yaml)): ```yaml apiVersion: install.istio.io/v1alpha1 kind: IstioOperator spec:

For consistency, the same profiles are used across each chart, even if they do not impact a given chart. Explicitly set values have highest priority, then profile settings, then chart defaults. As an implementation detail of profiles, the default values for the chart are all nested under `defaults`. When configuring the chart, you should not include this.
