### What is a Program

The word **program** is commonly used to describe many things:

* The **code** that you write, the **Python files**.
* The **file** that can be **executed** by the operating system, for example: `python`, `python.exe` or `uvicorn`.

    * JSON.

As environment variables can be set outside of the code, but can be read by the code, and don't have to be stored (committed to `git`) with the rest of the files, it's common to use them for configurations or settings.

You can also create an environment variable only for a specific program invocation, that is only available to that program, and only for its duration.

A **container** is run from a **container image**.

A container image is a **static** version of all the files, environment variables, and the default command/program that should be present in a container. **Static** here means that the container **image** is not running, it's not being executed, it's only the packaged files and metadata.
