Elasticsearch is built using the [Gradle](https://gradle.org/) open source build tools.

This document provides a general guidelines for using and working on the elasticsearch build logic.

## Build logic organisation

The Elasticsearch project contains 3 build-related projects that are included into the Elasticsearch build as a [composite build](https://docs.gradle.org/current/userguide/composite_builds.html).

You can define logic (code) that should be executed before the application **starts up**. This means that this code will be executed **once**, **before** the application **starts receiving requests**.

The same way, you can define logic (code) that should be executed when the application is **shutting down**. In this case, this code will be executed **once**, **after** having handled possibly **many requests**.

* The logic depends on external resources or could block in any other way
* Other dependencies need their results (it's a sub-dependency)
* The logic can be shared by multiple endpoints to do things like error early, authentication, etc.
* They need to handle cleanup (e.g., DB sessions, file handles), using dependencies with `yield`

## Context

The Gradle core platform provides many services to the Gradle platforms and builds logic. One such group of services allows logic to interact with the build user, to provide diagnostics, progress information, prompt for questions, and so on. Currently, these services are part of the core platform runtime architecture module.
