The build session state also includes "cross session" state that is shared with any "nested" sessions that need to be created.
This only happens when the `GradleBuild` task is used. You can mostly ignore the distinction between "cross session" and "build session" state.

## Open & import the project

In your IDEA, `File` - `Open`, select `.teamcity/pom.xml`, `import as project`, and you'll have a Maven project.

## Project structure

Mostly a standard Maven project structure. The entry point `settings.kts` defines the TeamCity project.

There are 3 subprojects in the TeamCity project hierarchy: `Check` for Gradle builds, `Promotion` for releasing Gradle versions, `Util` for miscellaneous utilities.

This has also forced plugins written in languages other than Groovy to use Groovy types for some APIs.

When the Kotlin DSL was introduced, we made an effort to add non-Groovy equivalents for all APIs.
This has been mostly done, but there remain a few holdouts (fixing these is out of scope).

To keep the Groovy DSL ergonomic, we generate methods as necessary from the non-Groovy equivalents.

## Platform architecture

Gradle is arranged into several coarse-grained components called "platforms".
Each platform provides support for some kind of automation, such as building JVM software or building Gradle plugins.
Most platforms typically build on the features of other platforms.

By understanding the Gradle platforms and their relationships, you can get a feel for where in the Gradle source a particular feature might be implemented.
